Innikloof is a little gem just outside Hankey in the Gamtoos Valley. We have ridden past the turnoff a number of times, but never investigated it. Earlier in the year we went to Tolbos restaurant in Patensie and on the way back we went to take a look. We immediately decided to book and a few weeks later we were there. Prince Albert is a little jewel in the Great Karoo. It’s such a joy to come across a dorp that hasn’t been trashed and this is one of them. Although it’s become quite trendy, it’s still has a lovely laid back feel. The difference is that you can enjoy wonderful restaurants, art galleries and a stunning museum, without the pretensions of similar ‘in’ dorps.
This year we finally had the opportunity to make a lifetime dream come true – we went to see the wild flowers in the Western Cape. Every year around August and September the north western part of the Western Cape explodes in a mind blowing display of wild flowers that is world renowned. In Dec 22 I mentioned a story I had been told of a herd of Dexter cattle that had been found in the Addo National Park (see HERE for the original post). Well, today I got a confirmation from a good friend who is a tour guide. Malcolm contacted a friend who was a ranger in Addo at the time and he sent the following image and audio clip about the cattle.
Isn’t this an amazing story? Imagine these few cattle being able to survive for 26 years undetected in Addo. Even more incredible is that they were able to breed and sustain the herd in that time. Shows how ferocious they must have been to protect their calves from the lions and hyenas!
Just goes to show – there’s always something interesting to be learned wherever one is. Thanks again to Nico Smit for sharing the story originally and Malcolm Bean for the follow up.

Recently we spent some time in Addo Elephant Park again. We are really privileged to have Addo so near to PE, it’s just a 30 minute drive if we just go for the day and an hour if we take Wagtail.
It’s our favourite national park and we never go there without seeing something wonderful. This trip was no exception. Continue reading “Addo National Park”
In May we joined Peter & Cheryl at Double Mouth, near Morgan Bay, on the beautiful Wild Coast. It’s an exquisite campsite nestling in a sheltered nook right on the beach. Continue reading “Double Mouth – Wild Coast”
This trip we went to the Forever resort on the Keurbooms river, just outside Plettenberg Bay. I had driven in to look around many years previously and have always wanted to stay there, so it seemed a good time to fulfill that dream. Plett is approx 250km from Port Elizabeth (P.E.), so it was an easy drive. We arrived at about 11.00am and after booking in drove into the campsite.
This trip we went to the Camdeboo National Park, just outside the lovely town of Graaff-Reinet. Camdeboo is one of our newer national parks. It was created in 1979 as the Karoo Nature Reserve and in 2005, after control was transferred to SanParks, was renamed the Camdeboo National Park. Continue reading “Camdeboo National Park”
